Q. What most draws you to outdoor adventuring?

T.M. As an artist, I constantly crave inspiration. The most incredible thing about nature is that it’s a never-ending source of that for me. I’ve never looked out into a field and thought, “well, the mountains don’t seem balanced” or “those flowers aren’t the most ideal hue of red.” Nature sets the precedence of what beauty is. If we don’t tap into that on a regular basis, our perception will most definitely be distorted and we will become detached from the most natural source of art.

Q. What does ‘outdoor photography’ mean to you?

T.M. I’m not a pro-photographer by any means, but its addicting to take photos of nature. It’s almost like running along the coast with mason jars trying to fill it with the crisp ocean breeze. As humans, we try to find a way to connect / collect to our environment by creating memories. A photograph helps to freeze that moment for us — and enables us to share it with the rest of the world.

Q. What first drew you to photography—and how did you discover it?

T.M. I was always addicted to art classes. When I was in high school, my art teacher broke down my junior year and finally told me how horrible my craftsmanship was. She encouraged me to pursue photography as a means to connecting to the artist side of me. I still decided on a degree in watercolor painting in college, but I always saw photography as a tool — a way to hold a glimpse of a moment so that it can be uniquely realized with paint / graphite later.

Q. What do you think makes a memorable adventure photograph?

T.M. Not setting up for it like it’s a shoot — but living in that moment of true adventure, and happening to take out a camera to capture it. Yes, set ups are usually more aesthetically pleasing (i.e. straight over head shots of your dinner with everything in perfect place) — but to your audience. Our memories of a moment are what make us, and stay with us. That’s usually not taking in creating a perfect environment for a shot.
